Find a Supervisor · Topic-Specific Research Program

Start Your Research Journey

Independent Research Lab helps research learners join topic-specific research programs designed to support the development of a publishable academic manuscript.

Through the “Find a Supervisor” pathway, learners may apply for a specific research topic and receive structured training, supervision, manuscript development support, and continued peer-review support.

Each topic-specific research program includes

  • Six general research training sessions covering the foundations of academic research and publication.
  • Three topic-specific supervision sessions with an assigned research supervisor.
  • Step-by-step guidance from research idea development to manuscript preparation and journal submission.
  • Reasonable continued support during the journal peer-review, revision, and resubmission process within the foreseeable scope of the project.
  • Support in journal selection, submission preparation, reviewer response, and manuscript revision.
  • A collaborative manuscript development process with a small group of research learners.

Academic integrity note: IRL does not sell authorship or guarantee publication. The program fee is for research training, topic-specific supervision, manuscript development support, and peer-review support. Authorship depends entirely on meaningful contribution, and publication depends on the independent peer-review process of the target journal.

How the Program Works

You first need to apply using the enquiry form. IRL will review your profile and contact you to understand your research interest, background, and eligibility for the selected topic. If selected, you will be enrolled as a research learner for the proposed topic.

You will then receive six online general research training sessions covering different aspects of academic research and publication. After that, a topic-specific supervisor with publication experience in a similar area will guide the group through manuscript development, refinement, and journal submission.

The final topic, research design, and manuscript title may evolve during the research process and may also change based on supervisor feedback and journal peer-review requirements.

Program FAQ

The indicative duration is 6 months to 1 year. However, the actual duration depends on the capacity and contribution of all co-authors, the quality of the manuscript development process, and the revision timeline of the target journal. Supervision and guidance will continue within the foreseeable scope of the program.

Important Note

IRL does not sell authorship or guarantee publication. The program fee is for structured research training, topic-specific supervision, manuscript development support, and peer-review support. Authorship depends entirely on meaningful contribution, and publication depends on the independent peer-review process of the target journal.

Option 1

Research Training Session Instructor

You may contribute by delivering one or more online research sessions. These sessions may be part of the standard six-session research training package, or you may propose a new one-hour live or recorded session relevant to research.

Possible session topics

  • Research methodology
  • Academic writing
  • Literature review
  • Systematic literature review
  • Bibliometric analysis
  • Data analysis
  • Publication strategy
  • Journal selection
  • Research ethics
  • AI tools for research
  • PhD proposal writing

Payment: Instructors are paid on an hourly or session basis.

Option 2

Topic-Based Research Supervisor

You may join as a topic-based research supervisor. In this role, you will guide a group of up to 5 research learners in developing a complete academic manuscript for journal submission. Ideally, supervisors provide three one-hour online supervision sessions covering research gap development, methodology, data analysis, journal selection, submission strategy, and reviewer response.

Students are primarily responsible for writing the manuscript. Supervisors provide academic guidance, feedback, and direction, and are not required to draft the manuscript unless they choose to contribute substantially as a co-author.

Your role may include

  • Helping learners refine the research topic
  • Guiding the literature review, methodology, analysis, and writing process
  • Supporting journal selection and submission preparation
  • Advising during revision and resubmission stages
  • Helping the group move from initial idea to publishable manuscript

Authorship: Supervisors may become co-authors if they make a substantial intellectual contribution to the manuscript. Alternatively, they may supervise the project without being listed as a co-author.

Payment: A flat supervision fee is paid in two stages — a first payment after the manuscript is ready for journal submission, and a second payment/bonus after the paper is accepted for publication.
